What is the role of the Plasma Membrane in the Cell?
The plasma membrane in the cell works as a semipermeable membrane which prevents the flow of some substances from inside to outside and outside to the inside of the cell. The plasma membrane selectively maintains the flow of substances in and out of the cell that is necessary in the functioning of the cell. The plasma membrane provides safety to the cell organelles inside it so that they could do their individual function perfectively.
Structure of Plasma membrane: Plasma membrane is made of phospholipids, carbohydrate, protein, and cholesterol, it is also named the phospholipid bilayer because its upper and lower layer is composed of a double layer of phospholipids.
Functions of Plasma membrane: (i) Plasma membrane is a mediator between the cell organelle and the external environment of the cell.
(ii)Plasma membrane is a semi-permeable membrane because it permits the movement of certain molecules in and out of the cell.
(iii)Plasma membrane takes place in both processes of endocytosis and exocytosis by the act of osmosis and diffusion. These are the functions of the plasma membrane through which it connects the inner environment to the external environment of the cell.
(iv)Since the cell junction is made of the plasma membrane so a change in one cell is communicated to other cells through the plasma membrane which is necessary in multicellular organisms.
(v)Plasma membrane is adjoint to a network of tubules and filaments called the cytoskeleton that provides a shape to the cell.
